The most wasted space in most houses. Pull out shoe and coat drawers, a hidden desk, a boot room or a downstairs cloakroom, all cut to the run of your staircase and built in your hallway rather than delivered flat.
No two staircases are the same, so nothing off the shelf ever fits.
The triangle under the stairs is the one bit of the house almost nobody uses properly. It usually ends up holding the hoover, a bag of shoes and something nobody can remember buying, with a door that only opens halfway because the newel post is in the way.
It is awkward because the space is awkward. The ceiling slopes, the skirting runs through it, the floor is rarely level and the opening is almost never square. Nothing bought in a box will ever sit in it properly, which is why we build these in the hallway, on the day, cut to the staircase in front of us.
What goes in it is up to you. Deep drawers that follow the stair angle for shoes, a tall cupboard for coats and the hoover, a fold down desk, a boot room for muddy dogs, or a full cloakroom if there is drainage nearby. Then it is filled, sanded and painted in so it reads as part of the hallway rather than a unit pushed into a gap.

Coat and hanging space
A tall cupboard with a rail, hooks and a shelf over, tucked into the high end of the void where the headroom actually allows it.
A desk that folds away
A fold down worktop, a socket and a couple of shelves. A usable work spot in a hallway that takes up nothing when it is closed.
Boot rooms and cloakrooms
Bench seating with storage under, tiled floor and hooks above for a wet dog and muddy boots, or a full cloakroom where the drainage allows it.
Wine and display
Angled wine storage in the narrow end, or open shelving with lighting where you would rather show something than hide it.
Scribed and painted in
Cut to the skirting, the stair string and the floor as they actually are, then filled, sanded and painted to match your hallway so the join disappears.
Built in your hallway, not in a factory
This is the job where building on site matters most. The void under a staircase has a sloping ceiling, a string running through it and almost never a square opening, so a unit made to a drawing will always leave a gap somewhere. We build it in place and cut to what is there.

How much does under stair storage cost?
Most under stair jobs land between fifteen hundred and four thousand pounds, depending on how wide the staircase is, whether you want drawers or cupboards, and the finish. Drawers cost more than doors because of the runners and the stepped carcass. You get one written price covering the build, any electrics and the making good.
How long does it take?
Usually two to three days on site for a standard hallway, plus decorating time if we are painting it in. A boot room or a cloakroom with plumbing takes longer. We agree the dates before we start and we stick to them.
Can you fit drawers if my staircase is narrow?
Usually yes, but it depends on the run of the hallway rather than the stairs. Drawers need room to pull out fully, so in a tight hallway a mix of drawers at the deep end and doors at the shallow end often works better. We will tell you straight at the design visit which way round makes sense.
Do I lose the cupboard under the stairs?
You lose the doorway, not the space. Most people gain usable storage because a single door only reaches part of the void, whereas a run of drawers and cupboards gets into the full depth including the awkward shallow end.
Can you put a toilet or a desk under there?
A desk, yes, almost always. A cloakroom depends entirely on where the soil pipe and drainage run, and on headroom. We will tell you at the design visit whether it is realistic before you spend anything working it up.
Will it match the rest of the hallway?
That is the point of building it in place. It gets scribed to the skirting and the stair string, then filled, sanded and painted in the same colour as your walls or woodwork, so it reads as part of the house rather than a unit pushed into a gap.
